Mullivaikkal Massacre
The Mullivaikkal Massacre refers to the mass killings of Tamil civilians during the final phase of the Sri Lankan civil war in May 2009. The Sri Lankan military declared "No Fire Zones" and encouraged civilians to gather there, then systematically shelled these zones. Tens of thousands of Tamil civilians were killed in the bombardment, including in hospitals, food distribution centers, and makeshift shelters. The United Nations estimated that over 40,000 civilians were killed in the final months of the war. The area became known as "the killing fields" and evidence of war crimes continues to emerge. Despite overwhelming evidence documented by the UN, journalists, and human rights organizations, no one has been held accountable for these crimes.
