What Happened

On 7 May 2006, eight young Tamil men staying at the Seerani Kelakkai Amman temple in Manthuvil East, Jaffna during a temple festival were abducted and presumed killed. Gunshots were heard around 1:10 AM and a suspicious vehicle was seen at 4:00 AM. Villagers discovered blood traces, pieces of clothing, 3 identity cards, and at least 6 empty bullet casings near the temple site. All victims were from Kelakkai village, including a 35-year-old teacher who served as the Temple Management Board General Secretary. The victims ranged in age from 22 to 35 years old.
