What Happened

On 19.12.2000, Sri Lankan soldiers entered the home of the Nadarajah family in Mirusuvil, Jaffna and massacred 8 family members including 4 children. The victims were: Nadarajah Ekneliyathasan (50), his wife Rasammah (50), their married daughter Thavamani (27), her husband Vimalathas (30), and their four children - Thanuya (9), Thamilvani (6), Sahana (2), and six-month-old baby Vinojan. The soldiers first shot the adults, then killed the children. The baby was shot at point-blank range. The army initially denied involvement but forensic evidence and witness testimony led to the conviction of 5 soldiers. This case became one of the few where Sri Lankan soldiers were convicted of killing Tamil civilians.
