What Happened

On 9 August 2006 at approximately 11:30 PM, a medical ambulance was attacked by three claymore mines detonated in succession by the Sri Lanka Army's Deep Penetration Unit (DPU) at Pandarakulam on the Nedunkerni-Oddusuddan Road. All five occupants were killed: Dr. Kathirkamathamby Jeyamalina (68), the only physician serving the Nedunkerni area; his wife Ponnamma; two nurses including Jehananthan Nahuleswari (37), a mother of three; and ambulance driver Kasupathy Gopalasundaram (54), a father of three. The doctor died en route to Puthukudiyiruppu hospital. This attack on medical personnel and a clearly marked ambulance constituted a war crime.
