What Happened
On 25 October 2007 at approximately 11:00 AM, Sri Lanka Army artillery fire struck a shelter housing internally displaced persons at Periyamadu settlement in Mannar district. The victims were families displaced from Adampan who were living in temporary huts. Three civilians were killed and nine wounded. Among the dead was Parimalam Selvanathan, a 20-year-old woman who was 8 months pregnant - her unborn child was also killed. A father and his 9-year-old daughter were also among those killed. Over 530 civilians from 42 families occupied the IDP settlement operated by the Tamil Rehabilitation Organisation.
