What Happened

On 29.04.1992, Sri Lankan security forces massacred Tamil civilians at Karapolla and Muthgalla in the Eastern Province. 97 Tamil civilians were killed in this coordinated attack. The massacre targeted Tamil farming communities in these villages. Soldiers went house to house killing civilians including women and children. Many victims were hacked to death with sharp weapons. The bodies were later discovered in homes, fields, and along roadsides. This was one of the largest single-day massacres in the Eastern Province.
