What Happened
Among the historic temples in Jaffna are the Vallipuram temple and the Nagarkovil temple. The Nagarkovil Mahavidhyalayam school was started in 1956 and upgraded to a higher school in 1967.
In 1990, people from the village of Mayiliddy were forced to displace from their village and around 600 families were living in Nagarkovil. The school grew from 400 students to over 830.
On 21st September 1995, the military shelled several areas in Jaffna from its Palaly camp. On the next morning, 22nd September 1995, while students were in assembly, a Kfir jet dropped a bomb on the school, killing 28 students - all children between ages 8-17.
Most were students who had already been displaced from their original homes.
