What Happened

Six-month military onslaught on LTTE-controlled parts of Trincomalee and Batticaloa. Started on pretext of Mavilaru sluice gate dispute. Villages affected: Eechilampattu, Nallur, Upparu, Sampur, Vaharai. Civilians pushed to Vaharai coastal belt. Massive attacks in November-December. Government prevented ICRC, SLMM access. Blocked food convoys for 6 months. Some civilians walked through forests to escape, 5 drowned when boat capsized. More than 200 civilian deaths.
