What Happened

On 27 November 2007, a group of school students and their trainers traveling in an ambulance to provide first aid services at Heroes' Day celebrations came under a claymore attack by the Sri Lankan military's Deep Penetration Unit (DPU) in Iyankulam village, Mullaithivu district. Nine people were killed: six students from Iyankulam GTM School (aged 14-17), two first aid trainers, and the ambulance driver. The students had received first aid training and had been assisting medical staff at a nearby hospital. One girl survived and provided descriptions of the attackers.
