What Happened

Unidentified gunmen Friday morning attacked a passenger bus, killing two females and a 12-year-old child in Buttala, Police said. 26 passengers were wounded in the attack and one of the wounded succumbed to injuries later. The bus was plying from Buttala to Kathirkaamam (Kataragama). The injured were rushed to Kathirkaamam hospital and 19 of them later transferred to Hambantota hospital. The Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) bus, belonging to Monaragala depot, was attacked at Galge 149 mile post at 10:30 a.m. Buttala - Kathirkaamam road has been sealed off. The police and the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) have launched a joint cordon and search operation in the area surrounding the attack site. Sri Lankan defence ministry officials in Colombo blamed the Tigers for the attack. Chronology: 13.07.
