What Happened
The three villages Mandaitivu, Allaipiddy and Mankumban (M-A-M) are situated across the Dutch Fort in Jaffna. On 23.08.1990, the military dropped notices ordering people to go to churches and temples. The military then entered and killed everyone who remained in homes - 20 people were brutally killed. Close to 500 young men aged 15-45 were taken from PhilipNeri Church in Allaipiddy. Women screamed and ran behind, begging the army. The Army threatened them with guns, shot over their heads and beat them back, while forcing children to recite "We don't want Tamil Eelam." Less than two months later, around 70 young men disappeared along with the military camp. 92 people were killed or disappeared. Bodies are suspected to be in covered wells. Douglas Devananda and Army Commander Denzil Kobbekaduwa were present at the site.
