What Happened
On May 13, 2006, Navy and EPDP paramilitaries killed 13 Tamil civilians in coordinated attacks across three villages on Kayts island. At 8:30pm, gunmen entered Sellathurai Amalathas's home in Allaipiddy and opened fire, killing 8 including a 4-month-old baby and 4-year-old boy. Another victim died in hospital. At 10:30pm in Puliyankoodal, 72-year-old Murugesu Shanmugalingam and 2 family members were shot dead. In Vangalavadi, tea shop owner Ratnam Senthuran was dragged out and shot. The attacks came 2 days after LTTE sank a Navy convoy, killing 18 sailors.
